What the award recognises

A Nutrition Excellence Award recognises a nutritional purpose supported by evidence that applies to the submitted product or ingredient. The assessment brings together composition, intended use, the strength of the evidence and the information provided to users.

  • For a food or drink, reviewers consider its composition as a whole and the role of a realistic serving in the diet.
  • For a supplement, the assessment relates ingredient identity and daily amounts to the evidence for the intended use.
  • For specialised nutrition, the evidence must address the needs and suitability of the intended population.
  • For an ingredient, recognition relates to a defined specification and its assessed applications.

Recognition with a defined scope

Each award identifies the product or ingredient assessed, its formulation or specification, the relevant market and the conditions of use covered by the decision. These details appear in the public record.

This makes the award useful to people checking a statement on a product or in a business document: they can compare the claim with the actual record. A different formulation or use requires its own consideration. Recognition of an ingredient does not confer an award on every finished product containing it.

The European Nutrition Society

The programme is organised by European Nutrition Society (ENS), an association registered in Switzerland under UID CHE-236.572.275. ENS is responsible for the programme rules, administration and public award records.

The assessment is based on submitted documents and evidence. An award is not a regulatory approval, a laboratory certification or an individual medical recommendation.

Free entry and independent decisions

The Nutrition Excellence Awards are a non-commercial awards programme. Entry, assessment and the standard award benefits are free. Optional physical items are supplied separately and have no bearing on the award decision.

An award includes a digital certificate and a public register entry whether or not the recipient orders a trophy, printed certificate or labels. Reviewers do not receive order information. Sales and fulfilment roles cannot change the assessment or award decision.
