How entries are judged

Two reviewers assess each accepted entry independently. The written decision explains the result and the reasons for it.

Independent assessment

Both reviewers work from the same defined product or ingredient, evidence and criteria version. Each records findings on the seven mandatory requirements and scores the five assessment criteria.

Their reasons identify the supporting sources and relevant limitations. Purchasing information is excluded from the application supplied for scientific review.

Resolving differences

A further independent review is required when the two assessments differ on any of the following:

The decision signatory records how differences were resolved and the basis for the final result. A failed mandatory requirement cannot be bypassed by averaging scores.

  • Whether a mandatory requirement is met.
  • Whether the entry meets the award standard.
  • The total score, where the difference is greater than 10 points.

The outcome

An award is made when the final assessment meets the mandatory requirements and scoring standard. The decision covers the named formulation or specification, intended use and relevant market.

When an award is not made, the decision explains the material reasons. That outcome is not published as a declaration that the product is unsafe or unlawful.

Your written decision

The decision remains available in your account.

After an award is granted

The public identity and recognition statement are checked against the decision before the record and digital certificate are published. Both are included without charge.

You receive a separate update when the certificate and public record are ready. The recipient guidance then explains digital mark use and optional physical items.

Requesting a procedural appeal

You can seek a review of a procedural error, material oversight of submitted evidence or relevant conflict of interest. The appeal is considered independently of the original decision and carries no fee.

Submit within 30 calendar days of the decision notice. A changed formulation or a different intended use normally follows the product-change or new-entry process.
